BACKGROUND
The Sustainable Santa Fe Commission was formed to advise the City Council (Santa Fe’s governing body) on issues of sustainability in the City of Santa Fe in its efforts to reduce carbon emissions and become a carbon neutral city. The Commission is made up of Santa Fe residents who were appointed because they bring a wide variety of sustainability expertise to the table. Over the last few years, the Commission worked to create the Sustainable Santa Fe Plan. The Plan outlines the ways in which the Santa Fe community can reduce its ecological and carbon footprints through steps in: renewable energy, green building, water conservation, waste reduction, alternative transportation, sustainable food, ecological adaptation and green city operations.

The Mayor asked the Commission to engage youth in the process so the Commission asked Earth Care to create and coordinate an Advisory Board for youth who are concerned about the future health of our City and want to make Santa Fe more sustainable. The Advisory Board took part in the creation of the Sustainable Santa Fe Plan which was passed into law by City Council on October 29, 2008. The Youth Advisory Board is now charged with the task of helping to ensure that the plan is implemented and that the public is aware of its benefits. Youth who serve on the Board have a demonstrated interest in sustainability issues, and previous knowledge about and/or experience with community issues, civic engagement, environmental issues, and green practices.
The Youth Advisory Board is a nine person youth Board. It's chair is a voting member of the Sustainability Commission. The Board generally works alongside the Commission to implement the Sustainable Santa Fe Plan. Though it has special projects which include:
The Sustainable Santa Fe Awards and Earth Day Celebration:
Every year the Youth Advisory Board takes the lead on soliciting nominations for the Sustainable Santa Fe Awards. The Awards showcase model projects in the areas of the Plan in order to raise public awareness and share best practices as well as local innovations. Awards will be given in renewable energy, green building, water conservation, waste reduction, alternative transportation, sustainable food, ecological adaptation, sustainability education, and youth-led projects.A public Awards Ceremony will be held April 24th from 5-7PM at the downtown Hilton. Community Food Assessment:
The Youth Advisory Board is also helping to conduct research for the Santa Fe City/County Food Policy Council as part of their Community Food Assessment. The purpose of the Assessment is to get a profile of Santa Fe's food security in order to identify gaps and make policy changes.
